pic_for_xmas_letter_conpleteDick and Joy met in a Youth with a Mission summer-long outreach in Yellowstone and Teton National Parks in 1977. The next summer they were married. Dick was the Chi Alpha director at Montana State University in Bozeman, and Joy, recognizing her own call to college student ministry, jumped in wholeheartedly.

Together, Dick and Joy directed the campus ministry at MSU for 30 years. For over half of those years, they trained Chi Alpha campus ministry interns. They believe that the currency of God’s Kingdom is relationships and strategically focus on developing disciples through relationship-based small groups and one-on-one mentoring. Their legacy includes hundreds of alumni who carry the values of Christ’s Kingdom into their jobs, families, and world missions. In 1987, Joy was paralyzed in a car accident. Through God’s grace, she continued active involvement in the campus ministry and home schooled their children David and Mandy.

In 2006 Dick and Joy turned the local campus ministry over to Tim Anderson, and the same year, a former fraternity house was purchased for a Chi Alpha house. More about that later. Dick and Joy now serve Chi Alpha as national field staff for leadership development. Dick travels to campuses and internationally teaching on the Father heart of God, Holy Spirit empowerment, and leadership character. His website, www.yougottheholyspirit.com, provides instruction for people newly filled with the Spirit. Joy is a life coach, mentor, and Bible teacher. She has developed Tools for Mentoring, a comprehensive manual of ready-to-use Bible studies for busy people who want to disciple others.

Two years after its purchase, it became evident that the Chi Alpha house needed something happening during the summers that would carry the mortgage payments and use it for discipleship. Dick and Joy, inspired by their YWAM summer experience, created Summer Job Project as an innovative solution to the problem. Each year, students come from all over America to encounter God and experience holistic discipleship while enjoying Montana’s stunning beauty.
